This two-part course is offered by the Greater Kirkland Citizen Corps Council in partnership with the City of Kirkland Office of Emergency Management.

Why is a basic knowledge of social media crucial?

  • Social networks have become a primary source of news and information.
  • Within the U.S., there are 128 million users on Facebook (that’s 40% of the population) and 34.7 million active adult users on Twitter. Social media is not going away so we need to swim with the current rather than fight the tide!
  • When an incident happens, conversations start online: you want to be part of this conversation and be able to stay informed as well as make sure that others are aware of potential dangers, in real time.
  • In many cases, social media can help fill the gap in communication during a disaster when wired communications or electricity fails –> one more way to make sure everyone is okay!

Part One: Saturday, November 22nd

9:00 -11:30 am @ Fire Station 26.

Course Content:

  • Overview of Social Media: the basics.
  • The use of Social Media in disaster preparedness and relief.
  • A closer look: Twitter. How does it work?
  • Best practices, etiquette and policies.
  • Questions and take-home exercises.

Part Two: Wednesday, December 3rd

7:00 – 9:00 pm @ Fire Station 26.

Please do not hesitate to come in with questions/concerns!

Course Content:

  • Debriefing of exercises: Successes and failures.
  • Twitter monitoring and analytics: what would we need in times of emergency?
  • Facebook overview and use for preparedness and relief.
  • Q&A

 

Required Preparation

  • In order to cover as much material as possible in class, participants are asked to complete the following tasks before the class.
  • Participants will need to come in with a Twitter account already set up.
  • They will need to know their Twitter handle (a.k.a screen name, for e.g. @JaneDoe) and their password. Here is tutorial video from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeVeR7regTY on how to set up an account. The interface might have changed slightly since the video is from 9 months ago but the principles are the same.
  • Try to familiarize yourself with the platform (where is my page? Where is the main feed? Where do I click to send a tweet?) but do not feel obligated to perform any task just yet!
  • IMPORTANT: You want your Twitter handle to be as short and easy to remember as possible. Avoid underscores, dashes and complicated numbers. @JSmith03 is better than @John_Smith_the_third because tweets are limited to 140 characters so if someone wants to tweet at you (we’ll talk about that during the training) it is not a good thing to have your Twitter handle already take up 20 characters.

Class Materials

This is a hands-on class.  Participants will be using the internet and social media during instruction. 

  • Participants should bring a laptop as well as a smartphone or iPad / tablet.  Please note: We are not able to provide computers or other technical equipment.
  • Ideally, you should also have the Twitter application installed on your smartphone before the training.
