...50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREAT ALASKA EARTHQUAKE...

ON MARCH 27TH 1964...A MAGNITUDE 9.2 EARTHQUAKE - ONE OF WORLDS
STRONGEST EVER RECORDED EARTHQUAKES - OCCURRED BETWEEN THE SOUTHERN
TIP OF KODIAK ISLAND AND CORDOVA ALASKA. THE EARTHQUAKE GENERATED A
TSUNAMI FELT THROUGHOUT THE PACIFIC OCEAN INCLUDING THE COASTS OF
WASHINGTON...OREGON...CALIFORNIA AND WESTERN CANADA.

THIS EARTHQUAKE WAS WHAT IS CALLED A DISTANT TSUNAMI SOURCE...ONE
THAT IS NOT FELT LOCALLY. A LOCAL TSUNAMI EVENT SUCH AS A CASCADIA
SUBDUCTION ZONE EARTHQUAKE JUST OFF THE COAST WOULD PRODUCE
SIGNIFICANT GROUND FELT SHAKING...LASTING FOR TWO TO FIVE MINUTES. 
MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LOCAL AND
DISTANT TSUNAMI EVENT CAN BE FOUND AT

THIS YEAR...WASHINGTONS STATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ALONG WITH MANY
OTHER NATIONAL PARTNERS WILL RECOGNIZE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS
GREAT EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI. THE EVENT TOOK THE LIVES OF 103 PEOPLE
IN ALASKA...FOUR IN OREGON AND 12 IN CALIFORNIA. FORTUNATELY THERE
WERE NO DEATHS IN WASHINGTON STATE...YET THE TSUNAMI DID PRODUCE
DAMAGE ALONG THE COAST. A COPALIS RIVER BRIDGE WAS DESTROYED ALONG
WITH A HIGHWAY 109 BRIDGE OVER JOE CREEK. THE TSUNAMI ALSO TORE
APART A HOUSE IN PACIFIC BEACH.
