Disastrous Mudslide North of Seattle‏

Tuesday, March 25, 2014 1:13 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Repost of an email sent today by the ARRL Northwest Division Director.

As most of you know, on Saturday morning just before noon, a huge
mudslide occurred on State Route 530, near the town of Oso.

Our first report of the incident came to us at the annual
Communications Academy at South Seattle College, where one of the
Snohomish County ARES Teams was in attendance with about 270 Amateur
Radio Operators, who are involved in Emergency Communications.

On Saturday Afternoon the Snohomish team was called into action and the
Command Van returned to the jurisdiction where some of the team
participated by assisting the County Emergency Management, with
communications.

As the incident was and is still in the response phase of the disaster,
there was a limited use of Amateur Radio assets.  As Snohomish County
moves toward the recovery phase of the incident, Amateur assets could
accelerate, but we are waiting for direction from the County Emergency
Management Officials.

Although the Snohomish County Amateurs appreciate the many offers of
help from nearby teams and Amateurs from across the State, all Amateurs
are cautioned about ‘self deploying’ to this incident.  Should
additional assets be needed the County and District Leadership will let
it be known by contacting various teams or through SM Monte Simpson and
SEC Frank Wolfe.

This incident is still changing by the hour and very good SITREPS are
being provided by the local media outlets.

Please keep the residents, first respondents and missing individuals in
your thoughts and prayers as this grim situation continues.

73 and good Hamming
